Dame Malvina has chosen to live in New Zealand, while maintaining an active international singing career. Her services to opera and the community were acknowledged in 1991 when she was invested Dame of the British Empire.

In 2008 she was amade a Principal Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit,changed in 2009 to Grande Dame of the New Zealand Order of Merit. In 1992 she was named New Zealand Entertainer of the Year. She has received Honorary Doctorates from both Waikato and Massey Universities.

Dame Malvina curently holds a teaching position as a Senior Fellow in Music at the University of Waikato. Hamilton, New Zealand.
